{"id":46,"date":"2014-02-28T22:11:31","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T22:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/?page_id=46"},"modified":"2014-08-25T01:48:08","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T01:48:08","slug":"the-crowning-glory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/indextemp.php\/the-crowning-glory\/","title":{"rendered":"The crowning glory"},"content":{"rendered":"<address>Back to &gt;\u00a0<strong><a title=\"The early years\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/the-early-years\/\">The Early Years<\/a><\/strong><\/address>\n<h1>More Titles<\/h1>\n<address>1960-1964<\/address>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1078632.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-434\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1078632-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"1078632\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1078632-300x232.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1078632.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In\u00a0 1960, Maria Bueno made a triumphant return to Wimbledon and retained her title\u00a0when she beat South Africa\u2019s Sandra Reynolds 8-6 6-0 in the final.<\/p>\n<p>By now a major celebrity, Maria was in great demand, particularly socially.<\/p>\n<p>She gained a certain reputation for making entrances when she arrived late for the\u00a0International Club dinner and upstaged His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh,\u00a0beside whom she had been seated as guests of honour.<\/p>\n<h2>The First Doubles Grand Slam<\/h2>\n<p>Despite singles losses in Australia (due to cramps in the excessive heat), Paris\u00a0and the US (after the final was postponed nearly a week by Hurricane Donna), she went on to win the Grand Slam in doubles, capturing the titles in Australia,\u00a0France, Wimbledon and Forest Hills with different partners &#8211; Christine Truman at\u00a0Kooyong and Darlene Hard at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Forest Hills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-439\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1211-300x283.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1211\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1211-300x283.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1211-1024x966.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1211.jpg 1266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It was the turn of her country to go mad. They issued a special air mail stamp\u00a0bearing the words \u2018campeonato mundial de tenis feminino\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>On her return home she was crowned with a tiara, seated next to Brazil\u2019s\u00a0President Juscelino Kubitschek in a helicopter and taken on a triumphant flight a few yards above the heads of a crowd of several hundreds of thousands of\u00a0 frantically cheering partisans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Foto016_s_m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-440 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Foto016_s_m.jpg\" alt=\"Foto016_s_m\" width=\"127\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>The Jockey Club gave her a car, the\u00a0Tiete Club two magnificent leather bound scrap books filled with newspaper cuttings of her exploits and they also erected a 60 feet statue of her near the\u00a0entrance.<\/p>\n<p>She was taken for a \u2018ticker tape\u2019 drive through the streets and they planned to rename the road in which she lived \u2018Avenida Maria Esther Bueno\u2019 until they\u00a0 discovered a law which forbids this until the person is dead.<\/p>\n<h2>The Queen of Fashion<\/h2>\n<p>Maria first attracted the attention of Ted Tinling, the couturier who dressed all the stars\u00a0at that time, in Paris on her first trip to Europe in 1958. He described her as &#8216;his greatest challenge. So compelling was the Latin magnetism that failure\u00a0could not come from her. If we did not succeed together :\u00a0 No alibis &#8211; it would be my fault entirely.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/friday-main.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-441\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/friday-main-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"friday-main\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/friday-main-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/friday-main.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>It seems Ted was\u00a0set to clothe Maria at Wimbledon but when he arrived he discovered she was going\u00a0 to wear clothing from the same company as used by Althea Gibson.<\/p>\n<p>A row apparently ensued at the exclusive Lady Crossfield\u2019s garden party on the eve of\u00a0Wimbledon but all was resolved and a successful\u00a0association began that was to last a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Always somewhat controversial, Maria and her dresses were trend-setters in the world of\u00a0 fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of shocking Italian Pink caused another stir when it appeared at Wimbledon in 1962 in the\u00a0 lining of Maria\u2019s all-white dress, a shocking contrast to the grey day under\u00a0which her semi-final against Vera Sukova was played on the Centre Court.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd gasped as Maria served, offering a brief and tantalising glimpse of the new colour.<\/p>\n<p>Only when she changed ends and served again did those on\u00a0the far side understand what had caused the amusement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-backhand.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-424\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-backhand.png\" alt=\"MEB backhand\" width=\"184\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a>Sadly, Maria lost the\u00a0match and a controversy arose over the distractions created by fashion.<\/p>\n<p>John Barrett describes in his book 100 Wimbledon Championships:- \u201cShown off to\u00a0perfection in some stunning Tinling creations, Maria captivated the knowledgeable Wimbledon crowd\u00a0until, towards the end of her reign, she appeared on\u00a0 Court No 1 wearing, beneath another pretty white dress, a pair of pants in navy\u00a0 blue with turquoise panels that matched the coloured panels of her under-skirt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To the unpracticed eyes of certain enraged committee members it appeared Tinling had deliberately chosen the club colours of green and mauve to adorn the most\u00a0shapely bottom in The Championships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next year, Wimbledon introduced a stricter predominantly white clothing rule.<\/p>\n<h2>Illness Strikes<\/h2>\n<p>Sadly, not everything was to go smoothly\u00a0for Maria.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of her career she was troubled by illness and injury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/250px-Maria_Bueno.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-442\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/250px-Maria_Bueno-189x300.jpg\" alt=\"250px-Maria_Bueno\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/250px-Maria_Bueno-189x300.jpg 189w, http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/250px-Maria_Bueno.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a>In 1961 she arrived in Paris feverish and\u00a0feeling tired. The trouble was not immediately diagnosed and she was allowed to go on exercising for\u00a0a couple of hours a day.<\/p>\n<p>Her condition worsened, the illness turned\u00a0out to be hepatitis and upon her return home to Brazil she was confined to bed for eight months, during which her weight dropped by 24 lbs.<\/p>\n<p>Already\u00a0slender, she sank below eight stones and looked just skin and bone.<\/p>\n<p>Her recovery was to prove slow but nevertheless certain and by February 1962, Maria had her sights set, once again,on Wimbledon.<\/p>\n<p>It was an\u00a0anxious and worrying time for her as she struggled to\u00a0regain her fitness and form.<\/p>\n<p>Major titles were to prove elusive that year, with Maria losing to Margaret Smith in the Italian finals after a\u00a0 thrilling match that showed her to be capable of her best, then falling to the\u00a0 clever Czech housewife, Vera Sukova at Wimbledon and again to Margaret at Forest\u00a0 Hills, both at the semi-final stages.<\/p>\n<h2>Back to winning ways<\/h2>\n<p>A year later, however, Maria won again at\u00a0 Forest Hills, beating Margaret 7-5 6-4 to prove she really\u00a0 was back at her very best.<\/p>\n<p>In both 1962 and 1963\u00a0she finished second in the world top ten ranking behind\u00a0only Margaret Smith.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\" alt=\"MEB with Wimbledon trophy and Court 1964\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\" alt=\"MEB with Wimbledon trophy and Court 1964\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\" alt=\"MEB with Wimbledon trophy and Court 1964\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MEB-with-Wimbledon-trophy-and-Court-1964.bmp\" alt=\"MEB with Wimbledon trophy and Court 1964\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/prod024.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-446\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/prod024-190x300.gif\" alt=\"prod024\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>1964 was a procession of triumph, with the\u00a0Wimbledon and American singles titles offsetting a loss to Margaret in the\u00a0French final and in December she was rewarded with the world\u2019s number one\u00a0ranking again, a status she had not enjoyed since 1959 and 1960.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00a01964 final was the high point of Maria\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>Not only had she overcome a\u00a0terribly debilitating illness but she had produced one of the best, if not the\u00a0 very best, performance of her life against her most worthiest of opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 match has since become a Wimbledon classic.<\/p>\n<p>And it was truly a personal triumph.<\/p>\n<address>For more &gt; <strong><a title=\"More triumph and darkness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mariabueno.org\/more-triumph-and-darkness\/\">More Triumph and Darkness<\/a><\/strong><\/address>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back to &gt;\u00a0The Early Years More Titles 1960-1964 In\u00a0 1960, Maria Bueno made a triumphant return to Wimbledon and retained her title\u00a0when she beat South Africa\u2019s Sandra Reynolds 8-6 6-0 in the final.
