Maria Bueno attracted crowds when she hit on court in Rio<\/p><\/div>\n

The tournament has got under way in Rio and Maria has been\u00a0 busy with a variety of activities.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend she conducted several sponsor clinics and\u00a0 appeared at a Pro\/Am. She also has done several media interviews and now she is\u00a0 at work calling the matches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe days are long but very worthwhile,\u201d she told the website. \u201cI am really pleased at the reaction I am getting from everyone. They are all very friendly and helpful!\u201d<\/p>\n

Maria\u00a0 has been putting in the mileage too, as the Jockey Club Brasileiro is enormous,\u00a0and the TV commentary boxes are a long way from the sponsor village.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got lost yesterday and was rescued by two of the\u00a0ballkids, who escorted me to the TV platform, warning me to be careful as I went\u00a0 up to steps!\u201d<\/p>\n

WTA Live<\/h2>\n

In\u00a0 addition to her SporTV duties, Maria appeared on the popular WTA Live All Access\u00a0 Hour presented by Xerox on Sunday, which was broadcast around the world via the\u00a0 WTA website and YouTube. \u201cI think it went very well,\u201d said Maria, who was\u00a0 interviewed by Vania King and Bruno Sassi. \u201cIt was fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

Brazilian wild cards<\/h2>\n

Maria\u00a0 has also had a chance to catch up with the Brazilian players, including Teliana\u00a0Pereira, the country\u2019s current number one, who recently led the fed Cup back\u00a0 into the team competition\u2019s World Group II play-offs, and is ranked at 98.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeliana got into the main draw and has to play today\u00a0 [Tuesday], as does Paula Cristina Gongalves, who was a wild card entry,\u201d said\u00a0 Maria. \u201cBut Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Pigoggi, who also got wild cards into\u00a0 the tournament lost in the first round.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure it has been a very good experience for them all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rafa is in town<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile the top seed in the men\u2019s event, Rafael Nadal,\u00a0 has been practicing daily and doing some sightseeing.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0 revealed his delight at kicking-off Rio’s local football derby between Vasco da\u00a0 Gama and Flamengo at the Maracana stadium on Sunday, when he was the guest of\u00a0 honour at the state league match.<\/p>\n

“It was a very special experience,” Nadal said. “I’m a big\u00a0 fan of sports, of football, and this is one of the most important stadiums in\u00a0 the world.<\/p>\n

“It\u00a0 has a lot of history and with the renovations it looks very nice. I think that\u00a0 it’s going to be a very special stadium for the World Cup. It was an honour to\u00a0 have the opportunity to do the match kick-off here.”<\/p>\n

Nadal plays his first match on Tuesday evening since losing\u00a0 in the Australian Open final and succumbing to back trouble and Maria will be in\u00a0 the commentary box.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is always interesting to call Rafa\u2019s matches,\u201d says\u00a0 Maria. \u201cHe plays with such intensity that everyone can learn from watching him.\u00a0 He never gives up on a ball, despite injuries and opponents who are doing their\u00a0 best to upset him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Bellucci wins<\/h2>\n

Local favourite Thomaz Bellucci wins his opening match<\/p><\/div>\n

Thomaz\u00a0 Bellucci received a wild card into the ATP event and won his opening match in\u00a0 three sets against Colombia\u2019s Santiago Giraldo, the sole Brazilian to win on day\u00a0 one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a good win for Thomaz,\u201d commented Maria, who\u00a0 called the match. \u201cIt was a very late match that ran well into the night because\u00a0 of the rain delay so to come through it was a good result.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 late night prevented Maria\u2019s appearance at the Player Party where Nadal, David\u00a0 Ferrer and Francesca Schiavone were in the spotlight at the seaside Sheraton Rio\u00a0 Hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was sorry to miss it,\u201d said Maria. \u201cI heard it was a\u00a0 fabulous event and that Francesca put in quite a performance up on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schiavone, like many others among the players, has taken\u00a0 the opportunity to spend some time with Maria.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been very friendly, as has everyone. It makes these\u00a0 rather long days very worthwhile!\u201d<\/p>\n
