Kerber wins second Grand Slam:<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"img_5479\"<\/a>The final weekend of the US Open is always exciting and Maria Esther Bueno was watching the great finals \u00a0as intently as everyone else as two new champions were crowned in New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cI watched Karolina Pliskova beat Serena [Williams] on Thursday and was very impressed with her serve and that she volleyed a few times,\u201d Maria Esther observed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut she was not the same player in the final against Angelique Kerber!<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it was nerves, and she did manage to win the second set, but it always looked to me that Kerber would win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angelique Kerber won the US Open title to record her second Grand Slam win of the year following her success in Melbourne defeating Williams, making the final at Wimbledon where she lost to the American, and a few weeks later collecting the Silver Medal at Rio 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has had an amazing year and is now the World No 1 too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is great to have some new personalities at the top of women\u2019s tennis. Let\u2019s hope they can stay there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have said before that it is a pity players [of] today aren\u2019t more consistent. It seems they win an important match or event and then fade away for months. I\u2019m not sure why that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kerber deposed incumbent Williams on Monday, who had ruled the rankings for 186 consecutive weeks, equalling Steffi Graf\u2019s record.<\/p>\n

Only time will tell whether this is a watershed moment in the women\u2019s game but it is a refreshing one to see another player rise to the top and she did it in style, defeating this year\u2019s rival for the title, the tenth seeded Pliskova, 6-3 4-6 6-4.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t one way traffic for the second seeded German, who had to recover from 1-3 down in the decider against a player she had lost to in the final of the Cincinnati Open.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, in the humid conditions, it was the big serving Czech, who eventually ran out of steam under the relentless play from the left-handed Kerber, as she scrambled around the baseline retrieving the seemingly irretrievable thereby forcing her opponent playa an extra shot and inevitably into errors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have amazing match stats these days and Kerber ran far more than Pliskova in that match, which shows the pressure she was under,\u201d continued Maria Esther.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good match, one of the best women\u2019s finals we\u2019ve had for a long time. Two new faces fighting hard. It was good.\u201d<\/p>\n
